What's in a name? Username meaning discussion thread.
« on: February 12, 2014, 02:49:04 PM »
I would have expected people to ask what the hell my username means, but maybe it's obvious?

Cheddar Stacker -  noun, often capitalized \ˈche-dər stak'ər\
Cheddar: a type of hard yellow, white, or orange cheese that is smooth
Stacker: a usually neat pile : a group of things that are put one on top of the other

So yeah, the stacker definition is accurate, but the cheddar part is way off. For those who haven't figured it out, it's sort of a tip of the cap to the rap genre, of which I am a quasi-fan while driving or mowing the lawn. Cheddar: cash money.

So, I like to stack my cash in a usually neat pile, and put my dollars one on top of the other.

Some others are obvious right, like:

MustachianAccountant-Likely an accountant, and is into the MMM philosophy.
Oscarsmom-Likely has a kid named Oscar.
Fireman-I think he's a fireman.

Some are a bit confusing, but you think you know what they mean, like Arebelspy. A rebel spy, right?

Anyone care to share the subtle meaning behind their handle?

"Trede" is short for tredecillion, which is a 1 with 42 zeroes after it.  So, roots in math nerdiness, not really a monetary target.  :)

I think this should be your monetary target as well. Just sayin.

"Crumbcatcher" is one of the slang names for a mustache (in addition to being slang for a very ample décolletage).  I thought it was cool for the mustache angle, because I'm trying to catch every crumb of my income in my 'stache.

(Doing so with mixed success, but hey, it's aspirational.)

Mine came from here

Then I should change my name to Michael Murdoch. Not a bad handle for the industry in my opinion.

I was wondering if it related to "Who moved my cheese".

Mine is a name pun. Cuz my name's Grant and it's a verb.

Interesting thread.  Mine means I am a guy from Brooklyn, NY.  Maybe that has something to do with why people tend to ignore my posts?

Mine has a couple of meanings. First my cat's name is Earl and sometimes I call him earlybird. Another is a play on "the early bird gets the worm." Also because I used to have to be the early bird and get up at 4:30 am to go to work.

I chose my internet-name at the tender age of 7, when Warcraft II was the best computer game in the world. It is a bit silly that I haven't changed it since then. The name does occasionally function as a people-who-jump-to-conclusions-detector, I suppose.

My dad went to high school with a guy named Lans Holman.  He liked the name so much he used to use it to check into hotels, order pizza, etc, back when you didn't need photo ID for everything.  So basically even my username is a hand-me-down.

Mine is dumb.  I don't play on the internets very often, so when I joined and was asked for a username I was stumped.

I chose some complicated misspelling of the word "bankruptcy" which I later shortened to Bank because it was slightly less ridiculous, and because I'd like to have some major bank by the time I retire.  The original name choice was because I'm a consultant who does a lot of work sorting out large corporate bankruptcies.

Like I said, dumb.  Particularly since everyone else's seems rather clever.

I Also used this same username for years..

My nick is a pen name I made up in HS after reading the  Dark Half, a female version of the the character George Starke. I used to cause a lot more trouble under this nick, but now it's just an easy way to have a unique username when I need one.

The joke/meaning in mine is explained in my signature. The "goblins who look remarkably like children" is a phrase my wife's used in her online profiles since we first had kids. It's slowly becoming my new screenname on services that allow you to change them.

I have not played that one.

My friend has this one and all the expansions - its really fun, although I about had a heart attack when I realized how much they must have cost him. Just the base game is $50 and the expansions are $40 to $50.

Mine is a name pun. Cuz my name's Grant and it's a verb.

I've been thinking of you as "Grant Mean Name". Now I see my error.

Heart of Tin comes from a Hans Christian Anderson story, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, and it's an aspirational username. The eponymous one-legged soldier endured a long, arduous journey away from then back to his home. Through the journey he was steadfast, stoic, and loyal. When he arrives home he is thrown into the nursery furnace by a small child. The paper dancer that he had fallen in love with blows into the furnace as well, and they die together. Here are the last two sentences of the story: "The next day, when a servant took up the ashes she found him in the shape of a little tin heart. But of the pretty dancer nothing was left except her spangle, and it was burned as black as a coal." The paper dancer never cultivated the rich inner life of the tin soldier, so her remains are correspondingly empty and black. The soldier's remains are indicative of his life of quiet perseverance despite his obstacles. I think the tie-in to Musachianism is clear.

Also, like the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz, I have a heart but sometimes need to be reminded that it's there. Additionally I'm from Kansas, and The Wizard of Oz is the most widely known Kansas-related pop culture item.

Started using Happy a few years ago as a superficially simplistic banal username in response to genre specific incredibly clever handles, that I generally didn't get. Also as a gentle self deprecating dig to remind myself to lighten up, as I can get a bit serious at times.

When I first joined I thought it might have been a bit frivolous for this board allegedly full of male engineers, but decided I wasn't going to change it just to fit in. I'm like that. Turns out to be very appropriate on many levels.

Mine is a nickname I've had since high school. It started with a mispronunciation of my last name by the announcers at different high school sporting events and kind of evolved from there. The 87 is for the kick ass year that god sent me down here for your entertainment pleasure.

I've gone by many names, but my current one is the name of my blog, and is my legal Chinese name.  I'm a white guy who grew up in the sticks in Washington, but I have a legal Chinese name because I lived in Taiwan for 6 years and got married there.  On all legal documents in Taiwan they use my Chinese name, including the spouse section on my wife's ID.  Technically the Roman Pinyin for it would be Ou Yong Hao, but I always preferred Americanizing it a bit by spelling it Oh Yong Hao.  I also speak fluent Mandarin Chinese, can read, type, and used to be able to write traditional Chinese.  It's funny, sometimes I can type faster in Chinese than my native Taiwan friends, and I can type much better than my wife can.

O yo-ng How might be how you pronounce it, most people get the Yong wrong and say something more like Yang, the 'o' should sound like an 'o'.  Sometimes I wonder if I should have picked an easier name for English speakers as my personal blog.  Oh well.

My name is one I use on another forum, which replaced an earlier form: teenstweensandatot, a nod to my kids when I was a SAHM. Alas, my teens are now in their twenties, the tweens are teens and the tot is approaching tween stage. Since I now work in a library, I realized that persuading teens is basically my job description, home and work.
Plus, "persuasion" is the title of works by favorite author/artists.

Mine is a riff on the book/movie "Accidental Tourist", which is about a travel writer who is going through a personal crisis which leads him to a time of introspection and reflection about what matters.

Upon finding MMM, I went through a similar (though much less traumatic) crisis, specifically related to life choices and money.  I began taking money seriously and considering how and when I could become FI.  Compared to my previous, spendy life, I am something of a miser now, so the moniker seemed to fit well.

Plus, the domain name was available.
