Sticky topics
« on: July 05, 2015, 04:39:22 PM »
What are the rules for topics becoming sticky and sitting at the top of the page? It appears to me that over the past few weeks, the number of sticky topics has grown, whereas it didn't really do so before.

And some of them seem a trifle biased - toward the US. For example, there is a sticky (which has always been there) about the best communications providers for the US people in the forum (possibly the Canadians can take advantage of it as well as they are contiguous countries). There is also a post that we have to search for (as it is not sticky) that says the same thing for Australia. Lately there is a sticky for US taxes and for 401ks and IRAs which is also a US only topic.

I realise that we have a posters from a lot of other countries here, and if we had a sticky for every different country, you couldn't see the latest messages. So I am definitely not suggesting that.

And stickies can be very useful. If the 401k and IRA sticky stops us having one post a week asking how to get money out of US retirement accounts early, it will be wonderful.

I started to think about this when the new Taxes sub-forum was introduced, and one of the first posts on it was a sticky for the US tax system, which also suggested stickies for other countries.

The US is the vast majority of the forum, so it is probably reasonable to have stickies for US specific topics. But how about we have one sticky that points to the ongoing posts for every other country (ie ONE non US sticky per sub-forum if relevant NOT one per country), so we can find the posts that are relevant to us? For instance we Australians have the Australian Investing Thread which we all find useful and has been ongoing for almost a year, but occasionally finds itself off the front page of the "investor alley" subforum.

There are no rules.  You ask as if there are moderator bylaws we check before we do something.  :)

It's done at moderator discretion. More stickies have been done recently in the hopes of cutting down repeated questions/provide useful information in an easier to find manner.

It has always been policy that if someone creates something useful, we'll sticky it. Especially if it's a conglomeration/index/table of contents of other threads.

If you want to create a thread pointing to a dozen different threads around investing overseas, knock yourself out. If it's useful, mods may sticky it.

:)

Yep, what ARS said...but if you do create an awesome list of uber useful threads...please PM a mod and let us know you think it is a good sticky post.

Good point, we don't always see everything.
