Connection Problems
« on: February 06, 2019, 08:26:21 AM »
What is up with the servers?  For weeks now I've been getting connection errors on the regular.  Multiple times a day, every day I get the following error message:

"Connection Problems
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later."

The problem is intermittent and usually resolves itself fairly quickly, but it's mildly annoying and happens a lot.  I got it about 5 times just trying to start this thread.  It happens at work, home, and on mobile so I'm pretty confident the problem is not on my end.

I don't have an answer. Just chiming in to say I've seen the same error message regularly -- maybe once or twice as I flip through a number of forum topics over the span of a half hour.

Same, and I've had multiple forumers I contact through other means mention it as well. Seems incredibly common, and, as you mentioned, has been a couple weeks now. Has seemed especially acute the last week for me. I feel like the last time this happened was after the big influx of new members after the Tim Ferriss podcast? But there doesn't seem to have been an influx of members posting so... *shrug*

I've seen it too.  I assume the tubes to the digital ocean are a bit clogged.

As a loyal forum member, I feel MMM owes me a functioning forum.  Worst forum uptime ever.

Comic Book Guy: As a loyal viewer, I feel they owe me.
Bart: What? They've given you thousands of hours of entertainment for free! What could they possibly owe you? If anything, you owe them!
Comic Book Guy: Worst episode ever.

Honestly, my worry is after the gossipy divorce thread and subsequent blog post referencing it, MMM is planning to happily let the forum die a slow death crushed under connection problems. I'm a pretty sensitive person, so I think if I was him and didn't really need the money of the blog and people had made me feel that way, I'd be tempted to burn it all to the ground. =\

Contacting a moderator directly is usually more effective than posting a thread they may not see. (Sorry, I feel like that is coming out sounding bitchy, which is not how it's intended. :) )

Tagging @arebelspy and @FrugalToque cos they're the only two moderators I can name off the top of my head.

I agree that the forum has been unavailable quite frequently for the past few weeks.  I assumed I had personally crashed the MMM servers by being on here too much.

Case closed, everyone.  It was sol all along.  I'll get the torches and pitchforks.

I'm sure all of us robo refreshing instead of taking the time to read long responses adds to it too. I refresh A LOT when it's down. :o

So this thread lasted for only two days, Feb 6 - 8. And I didn't hear anything about it again. But apparently forum connection issues got bad, and I found out a few months later.

So we just did a bunch of work on optimizing the forum (we meaning the App Developers and Site Admin--they get all the credit).

Please let me know if that fixes it, or if it continues. Post a lot about it, PM me, etc. Be loud.

I don't visit enough to experience it myself, so I need users to let me know how the performance is.

Cheers!
