Hi, during the last few days, I have experienced lots of connection problems. It happens when I try to open a page on the forum from Notifications, under modify profile. But I think it would happen from any place. It happens very often and it is not only the case when the Americans are coming online but all times of the day.

Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.
Is this an issue on the site? Perhaps the server could be restarted?

It happens ALL the time. I think the servers aren't really capable of handling the amount of traffic this site gets now, and it just freaks out periodically when things get too busy.

I also get these constantly.
Is this something that can be made better by additional server space?

MMM has previously written about how the tech side of the blog is managed. He has apparently resisted going to dedicated servers, instead surviving by buying the "delux" version of hosting available from larger sites. Perhaps the site has finally grown so much that this is no longer sufficient. Perhaps he's not interested in having his own system, with all of the headaches that entails.

Site is getting really bogged down lately. Some parts of the day for hours at a time.

I have been encountering this all the time too. Especially annoying when I am trying to make a post and it happens.

It's not necessarily a problem with the server. The software isn't optimized for this kind of traffic. When a page is requested, data is fetched from the database and the page is rebuilt which is an expensive process. Scalable websites minimize disk usage and serve content from memory. Configuring the software to use the disk less would make the site more stable.

Just mentioned this in another thread. Yea its really getting bad. I think its time MMM if he hasnt already started to look into it does about upgrading the website. Nothing more irratating then these issues. Once in awhile fine but its been happening with so much regularity that there is a problem for sure and enough people are having it that is not a singular persons problem.

This is on our radar, and we're looking at various solutions.

latest posts toward the bottom of the forum home page has disappeared...not sure if this is due to the connectivity issues or a separate and distinct problem. i noticed pretty quickly because i love that feature :/

That was removed to help improve performance. Every time someone goes to the forum home page, that has to be regenerated, causing a small performance hit.
