Hello everyone, I wanted to introduce myself and ask for simple advice and if I am on the right path. I ended up at this blog after reading JL Collins “the simple path to wealth” and Dave Ramsey’s “total money makeover”. I am currently 25 years old working a very good job for the city of New York in the department of sanitation. I have 2.5 years to reach their top pay. I currently live at home paying no rent, but have debt that I am still trying to clear off. That is my main goal as of now. should I postpone investing while paying off as much debt as possible? I currently have a pension system in place and I also contribute to a Roth 457 which is a pre-arranged portfolios.
https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/olr/downloads/pdf/shared/paps-profile.pdf 2055 Fund. Should I stop contributing to that 457 plan and invest that money into VTSAX? I am currently putting in 4% each paycheck. There was also a “financial advisor“ that came to our department and was trying to sell whole life insurance as an investment. After completing both books that seems like a bad idea. I just want to be on the right path so that I am so that when I am eligible to retire in 25 years with the city I can be financially independent. quick bullet points of what I got from those books; am trying to do is get out of debt, save money while investing 25 Percent savings/25 investing?, work on getting it apartment/house to live in the next couple years. Any advice would help. Thank you for your time and thank you for a cool blog and forum.
