Mike Piper did a nice discussion of small business and "vocational" expenditures as good investments here:

I post this partly because it's a good discussion, but also because Mike discusses head on something I feel like we sometimes see here: An emphasis on traditional asset class investments (like a stock index fund) even when actually the investor may have arguably better investments in their earning power: another vocational credential, a good small business, etc.

I enjoyed the article... Thank you for posting.  I started a new business last year and a I had a lot of internal debates regarding these same trade-offs.  By the way I love your website Evergreen Small Business (I am also in WA), I referenced it many many times while starting up.
