I've started three companies in three countries. Each time I asked someone for a reference for a good CPA. I've also switched accountants a couple of times and each time, I asked for a reference. Sometimes the choice I made was good, sometimes it was bad, but in every case it was because someone told me about the accountant.
So, if you are just starting out, you need to make yourself available to people who can make referrals; other CPAs, lawyers who file paperwork at the state and federal lever, real estate agents (new people moving in to town possibly need CPAs) or anyone else you can think of.
Building a practice isn't done overnight, but if you are good and reasonably priced, you shouldn't have any problems. Lots of other people have done it and you can too.
