Starting a trucking company, resources?
« on: April 16, 2018, 02:03:01 PM »
I'm asking this for a friend, who's trying to expand his successful one-man business by buying more trucks and hiring some drivers.  Are there any good online resources about starting and running a trucking business?  I'm trying to push him toward a finding a SCORE mentor, or similar, but in the meantime doing what I can to help.

I'm a several time entrepreneur, but don't know the nuts and bolts of trucking!

Maybe hang out at Flying J and other truck stops?  Not online but seems easy enough.

I would suggest finding out if there are any driving schools that certify truckers/CDL near their location, then speaking to the instructors. Some trucking schools offer job placement after graduation, and I'm certain the instructors can offer some advice if they so choose.

Since I'm here before SC93 (he apparently spends a lot of time in bed), I'll say it for him; Tell your friend to just do it.

Since he (your friend) is a successful trucker, he (mostly) needs business acumen.  SCORE is a great idea.

But his first step is to write / develop a business plan.  What kind/type of trucking biz?  What scale?  How is he going to deal with payroll, taxes and maintenance?  Driver no-shows and vacations?  Trucks going 'out of service'?
