Wobbly ceiling fan.
« on: August 29, 2014, 04:41:22 PM »
Well, I mentioned in some other thread (that I can't seem to locate now) that I had a slightly wobbly ceiling fan.  The recommendation was a balancing kit.  $10 later and I had 2 of them in hand and I had at it today.

First I checked the tracking.  To simplify the description, I'll refer to the blades by compass points (even though it's technically incorrect to refer to them that way) :-) .  The "N" and "S" blades were a perfect match.  The "E" and "W" were also a perfect match for each other, but 1/4" different from the first 2 blades.  All attempts to adjust tracking failed.  The fan has really heavy mounts and they refuse to bend at all.

So, I moved on to trying to smooth it out with the weights.  I started as listed in the directions (in the middle) and worked my way in, ultimately running out of blade to attach to.  Every place I put the clip made it worse.  I was unable to discern any particular location as better than another.

I did however manage to chip the finish on one of the blades with the clip.  It's subjective, but I think the system as a whole is worse now after I worked on it.  On to the questions:

Is tracking required to be perfect, or can weights compensate for tracking that's non-adjustable?

How about alternate weighting systems?  Has anyone tried some sort of putty on the blade attach points (to get less weight closer in to the center)?  I'm afraid it would dry up and go flying off at some point.

Other ideas?

Would a well placed washer or two under the mounts fix the tracking?

I've never really played with the weights...  I can't comment on a workable procedure there.

I've used pennies held on with electrical tape before.

I used a couple quarters and some duct tape to fix one once.  Worked fine.

You may have covered this in the other thread, but is the junction box that the fam is attached to secure? If that is loose then no amount of tinkering is likely to alleviate the wobble. If it is secure some carefully placed washers as discussed above is a good solution to adjust the blades.

Box seems solid.  The way the motor mounts just seems to have some excess play that leads to it very easily starting to rock.  The light stems sticking out below are also long and flimsy so they seem to magnify the motion.  Currently we've just set a "low speed only" policy for that fan.  :-)  Barely noticeable at low, gets noisy (creaking) at medium, and scary at high...

How old is the fan? Some have rubber motor mounts to help reduce the oh-so-common humming noise that comes with some fans.  These little mounts may be worn out from age or motion.

Unknown age, came with the house.  Mounting system *appears* to be OK, but maybe I can find replacements and see if that helps.

I'm thinking of mounts inside the housing that support the actual motor, not the one(s) where it meets the ceiling, just to be clear.
