When does it makse sense to repalce instead of repair...
« on: November 14, 2013, 09:07:42 AM »
I've repaired the 13yr old dishwasher 3 times in the last year, about $120 into parts + several hours of labor.

My usual rule is '3 strikes you're out' - which it just hit. The idea being that once stuff starts to go, it's a downward slide and it ends up costing more in time & maintenance than a new one. But this is a really nice unit, stainless and quiet and very effective (when it runs). So I've been holding off.

Any of you have a rule of thumb for when it's time to replace instead of keep fixing?

My rule of thumb is pretty much if repairs cost more than 50% of new I'm looking real close at replacing. Especially if I keep having problems with the item or have other worn parts that may cost another 50% of a new one.

Another concern (probably not with a dishwasher, but maybe) is if the new one efficiency pays for itself in a relatively short time.

Tough call.  If it's an easy and cheap fix then go for it. Then start checking craigslist for a replacement. When you spot a good deal, snatch it up.

Our dishwasher is about 22 years old. I've had to fix it twice in the past four years but both times it did not cost much. (Found used parts on ebay for cheap).  I figure one more strike and it's gone.
