Ultragauge
« on: August 18, 2014, 10:25:45 PM »
So I normally have an OBII diagnostics reader for my vehicle but recently it hasn't worked on my newer vehicle and no way to update the reader. I did an extensive search and found Ultragauge. It plugs in full time and gives you a real time reading of all the sensors on your car; plus has alarms and will read/clear the trouble codes; it can also be used on multiple cars . I paid $79 bucks and I'm very impressed with it.

They try to up sell it for fuel savings purpose but I will mainly use it for diagnostics. If my car has any problems I can pin point the issue immediately and take action or put it off for a later repair. I think this reader will pay for itself over time and thought I'd share with everyone. I've been a mechanic for over 18 years and I love knowing the real data on my car instead of waiting for a light to come on.

I'm still working on a custom setup and will post back when I have the most helpful setup.

Scangauge is a close competitor but I went with ultra because it shows more data on one screen plus it was cheaper and does more.

It sounds good but what separates from the more expensive scanners?  I have been passively looking for a code scanner for a while and this looks interesting.

Did you comparison shop against the Scangauge (whcih also stays plugged in and gives you real-time readouts)? If so, what did you like better about the Ultragauge?

(I have a Scangauge and like it, but if I were buying something new today I'd also be considering a bluetooth ODB2 plug + Torque Pro (for android), or maybe some kind of arduino or raspberry-pi DIY thing.)

I figured that they are cheaper because they only direct sell to the customer. Plus must of the high end ones have the ability to adjust parameters (tuner). Scangauge is a close second but only shows 4 sensor readings (Ultragauge can show 8 sensors) but the price on the scangauge is close to $160.

Jack, I chose Ultragauge because of the reasons above. I thought about the torque pro but I wanted something full time and didn't want something draining my phone. I think if I just wanted something for a random check up on the car I'd go with the Torque pro. I just retired and I'll be taking a lot of long road trips. I think the Ultragauge will be able to let me know a problem before it totally leaves me stranded.

Just be sure to hide it when you leave your car unattended.  I had one, and it was stolen from my car (foolishly left unlocked) in a hotel parking lot.  I'm 99% sure they thought it was a GPS.  Jokes on them; street value of an Ultragauge is probably approximately 0 dollars.  I laughed pretty hard when I put all that together.

I recently took my first long trip with mine and found an interesting fact...my engine water temp runs 20 degrees cooler when I run my A/C. I guess because the condenser is located in front of my radiator. I'm still trying to figure out the best setup each page. The ones I like so far one the first page is:
Water Temp, Cat temp, Fuel pressure, Volts, fuel level %, TPS %, intake temp, UG temp.
