Toilet Repair
« on: June 21, 2015, 08:44:52 AM »
My first post on MMM.

Is there any rookie hazing on here?

I bought a toilet (at a decent price of $84) for a bathroom remodel with the intent on selling my current location in 6 months (bought as short sale, doubled value in 3 years, planning to move to a lower cost-of-living city).  The current toilet was leaking water and generally older (some lighter stains).  Had a MMM moment when I realized the smart thing to do is fix the existing toilet leak and return the new toilet.

Instead of the new toilet installation hassles (plus figuring out how to discard the existing one), I did a 10 minute fix to stop the leaking.

Repair cost:  $4.  "New" toilet return refund:  $84.  Money saved:  $80.

Good job.  A new toilet is sometimes the answer, but not this time for you.

I recently replaced the toilet in my rental, in preparation for my new tenants, my parents.  The old toilet didn't leak, but didn't flush well.  It was about 12 years old.  I think lots of letting the "yellow mellow" as some people do, and perhaps a less than stellar cleaning history, led to a lot of mineral build up in the siphon jetway (which is somewhat cleanable) and the trapway (hard to clean).

A new Glacier brand $88 toilet not only fixed the poor flushing but works 2x better than the older Kohler, and uses slightly less water.  I also found that the wax seal was loose, and so it needed a new one anyway.  Oh and the old seat was broken, the most recent non-family tenant didn't want to mention it.  How you break a toilet seat is beyond me.

Nice! I like figuring out the cheap fixes. Better for the wallet and the environment. And I learn something too, so it's empowering.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
