In today's episode of inexpensive space-maximizing kitchen victories, behold my new spice rack, custom made to fit our cupboard. We previously had the spice jars all sitting on the bottom of the shelf, three or four deep. Finding anything took forever. Now we have 52 compartments for alphabetized spice jars, with room in front for some other stuff.

I made the whole thing out of a 2' x 4' sheet of ¼" plywood. Total cost: $7 and a couple hours cutting it up with my table saw.

We just finished a full remodel including new cabinets, countertops and appliances. Total spent was 14.5k. Our kitchen was built in 1974 and still.had the original countertops and cabinets. We did a mini-update when we moved in and painted the cabinets and countertops and changed the hardware. This was a stopgap measure until we could fully renovate.

We didn't really do any of the work ourselves except some painting because.we know our DIY limits.

Cost breakdown was:

Cabinets and installation: 8.8k (went through Lowe's and had an excellent experience)
Electrical, plumbing, drywall, and flooding work: 1.6k
Granite countertops, sink, and installation: 2.3k (local granite supplier)
New refrigerator, stove, microwave, and dishwasher: 1.8k (we received a $700 gift card as a rebate for buying the cabinets so the total would have been higher without it. Also, we found a floor model counter depth fridge ridiculously cheap)

We originally wanted to spend 12k, but decided to spend extra for the granite and decided to spring for a new fridge since a counter depth fit the space better and we found a good deal on a floor model. We also spent more on the electrical than anticipated.

We didn't change the layout much, but the tweaks made has become increased the efficiency so much. The previous dishwasher was retrofitted about 20 years ago and there wasn't room by the sink so we had pipe running through cabinets. We were able to move it next to the sink so now we have more useable cabinet space. We also had a wall oven and capitol which made a small kitchen feel claustrophobic and took up a ton of counter space. Now We have just a normal stove and much more counter space to work with. The other big change as getting rid of a Kitchen desk and creating a buffet. It looks great and gives a ton of storage space. Overall, it is just an efficient use of space and I finally have drawers that close!
