Some Way of Necklacing a Pendant
« on: December 15, 2013, 02:27:35 PM »
Hey guys,

So Christmas is coming up, and my girlfriend's present needs sorting. Her favourite mineral is tourmaline (She's a geologist), and my plan is to get a piece and have it as a pendant, and make that into a necklace. So I want to string it in some way, but of course I don't plan to just have any basic string. I need some way of making it into a necklace and have a band that can be used to keep it around her neck, and I want it to be something I can put some effort into and make nice for her. Of course I'm basically demanding someone else do the thoughtful part for me, but I sadly know nothing on this subject, not what the basic options even are.

Does anyone have, or know where I can find, some information and how to best do this and make it an amazing present? I know you're a resourceful lot.

http://ashprey.com/zencart/images/pink%20topaz%20necklace.jpg uses a solid metal with "hooks" soldered on to hold stone to back. I said solder since welding seems excessive
http://www.instructables.com/id/Copper-wire-wrapped-pendant/ wrap a piece of metal to form a cage around stone
are two of the easier methods I've seen. Note, seen, I haven't made any jewelry before.

edit: one that I'm fond of is something like this one below. You could put a stone in, instead of the light?

What you do will depend on whether the stone has any hole drilled in it or not. If it has a hole front to back, you need a finding called a "bail" then you can string it onto any kind of chain or necklace you choose. If there is a side to side hole, then the necklace can be strung through the stone if it is fine enough, if not you can put wire through the hole and make some loops to attach to a necklace or use a wire choker type necklace. If there is no hole, then you need some kind of mount. If it is a flat backed stone, you can put it into a bezel. If it is an irregular shaped stone, finding a bezel just the right size will be impossible. A DIY metal bezel will require you to do some soldering. But there are other creative ways of doing a bezel. There are beaded, crocheted, wire wrapped, and macrame bezels. Googling any of these will bring up tutorials.

But if you're talking about a faceted stone, with a pointed back, a jeweler's pronged setting may be the way to go.

Hope this helps. If you have any more questions, I'll try to answer.

What a sweet and awesome idea!! (possibly biased as I am also a geologist, and kinda have my eye on a tourmaline engagement ring...)

If you are in a decent size town, there may be a bead store around (a place like http://www.thebeadmonkey.com)... they will probably be super helpful and you can also buy the parts you need there. That's what I would do!
