Side Gig: T-shirts and Coffee Mugs on demand
« on: November 22, 2016, 02:48:54 PM »
A friend of mine is very artistic and does little drawings for herself just to pass the time.  I saw this one and insisted she set up a store on CafePress.com to sell t-shirts and coffee mugs w the drawing printed on them.   I've attached a copy of the drawing as a point of reference.

I did the initial research on it for her.  Basically, you take a drawing or photo and scale it appropriately.   Then you attach the appropriately scaled image to a picture of a t-shirt, coffee mug, key chain, etc.  on the CafePress.com website.   They tell you how much it will cost you when someone buys that product and you set the price you want to set for it.

I'll keep you posted on whether it works out as a great side gig for her!

The CafePress interface is a bit clunky and cumbersome to use, but it's not hard to take a drawing or a photo and get it put onto products.   You don't have to stock inventory, they print on demand.  Pretty cool, eh?

And if you can't draw (like me!), you can use a photograph.

Here's the link to the store so you can get an idea of prices.  The CafePress.com site has a list of costs per type of time so you can figure out how much profit there is in each item.

A good photo or drawing could turn into hundreds or thousands of dollars with very little work once it's added to the product design.

PS - we ordered one each, so she's at least $15 to the good.

I'll dig the base prices for items out of CafePress, but it may take awhile for me to find them again.   Oddly organized website...

The hurdle with CafePress as an income stream, it seems to me, is getting people to see your design on there.  Does your friend have a blog or website where she could post a link to send people over to buy her items?

Not yet.   She'll have to use Facebook and hope her friends spread it around for now.

When I ran my website back in the Oughts I sold Café Press stuff printed with my site's logo and made a little money.  That seems to be the best way to do it rather than just putting something out randomly, but let us know how it goes!
