Reusing HP Laser Toner Cartridges questions
« on: February 17, 2017, 04:33:10 PM »
Hi,
I saw a kit on Amazon for at home refilling of laser printer cartridges. I have had bad luck with recycled cartridges I've bought online & wonder if this might be a better approach. Have any of you tried this? How did it go? Also, I found a kit online that looked interesting but it doesn't come with a "reset" chip. How much of a problem is that? Thanks!

First off, the real answer is: No.  I've never tried it.

But... I've dealt with printer toner.  Holy moly what a messy bunch of crap that is.  Unless they have some ingenious method of putting toner back in the cartridge -- don't do it.  You'll be working for months trying to get that stuff out off and off of everything.

I'm not saying they DON'T have some ingenious method.  But I'd be skeptical.

I've had excellent results with replacement toner from Supplies Outlet on my HP LJ3600N. I also wouldn't fool with trying to refill one myself. The toner particles are extremely small, humidity is a concern, and I think pre-made working parts are readily available and cheap.

(I have no connection with them other than as a [very] occasional customer.)

I've purchased refilled cartridges, and also refilled my own.  Refilling your own is a bit more work, but it's certainly doable.  I'd suggest you do it in the garage, in case you spill toner.  I don't think it's as big a deal as the others have made it out to be, though.

Purchasing refilled cartridges is hit-and-miss.  Sometimes you get cartridges that work just fine, other times it smudges or causes other printing problems.  But when I can get a four-color set for $50 vs $350 for a set of brand-new, name-brand ones, I'm willing to accept some risk :)
