reuse expansion tank (water heater)?
« on: January 19, 2024, 11:37:50 AM »
I'm replacing a boiler-fed hot water tank with a hybrid hot water heat pump.

Previous tank has a 2.1g expansion tank installed in 2019.  no leaks and looks in good shape.

Q:  Would you reuse the expansion tank? For me it's less about saving the $50 and more about not tossing something that probably has > half its useful life left into our landfill.

Installation location is in an unfinished basement, so I'm not overly concerned with drips/leaks (concrete floor, concrete walls, prone to mild water intrusion during big storm events anyway).

If it's still working properly I don't see why not. I'm on my 2nd expansion tank, the first one failed somehow and got full of water, so I assume they have a limited lifespan. But I would periodically check it to see if it needs replacement. Side note, how do you check if expansion tanks are still working?

they'll start leaking.
You can also check to make sure they are holding pressure - there's a small valve on one end you can hook up to a a tire-style air gauge.  you can even use a bike pump to increase/decrease the pressure to match your water pressure (like if your municipality increases the pressure to serve more homes with the same water mains).

They can easily last decades if they are not in a corrosive environment. I have one more than 20 years old in great shape in an outdoor shelter.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
