Replacing feet in footie pajamas
« on: February 27, 2014, 12:42:54 PM »
My oldest has quite a collection of pajamas with feet and more coming all the time from hand-me-downs and thrift stores.  I have considered just cutting off the feet when they are wearing out, but I'd prefer to replace them so they have more value when they go back to the thrift store eventually.

I've seen the purpose-made fabric for grippiness and the day puffy paint idea.

Anyone have personal experience with this?  I was wondering about using used grippy socks from the hospital as they are next to nothing at the thrift store and don't require new materials.  We have slippery floors so there does need to be some sort of grippiness to the foot.

What a good idea to use grippy socks.  As you say they are next to nothing.

Are you only replacing the soles or are the toes coming through too?

The toes seem to be okay thus far. The soles are often worn through.

I was thinking that a potential problem with the trippy socks is the knit-ness of them may make it harder to sew.  Maybe I just need to try it out.

I would try with a zig zag or other knit stitch that your machine offers.  The PJs are not a knit so there is the potential for too much stretch from the socks.  But as you say, there is minimal cash investment in this potential solution.

Alternately, JoAnn's has coupons on their website. You could buy a half yard of the grippy fabric with a 40 percent off coupon--again a minimal investment.  I would sew a straight seam then zig zag the edge to prevent fraying and give it some strength.

I am not sure how well puffy paints hold up to repeated laundering--or if they survive hot dryers if you are using one.

Hmm.  I appreciate the suggestions.  I think I will just need to try out something.  Will avoid the puffy paint for reasons mentioned by worsted skein.  Also in my hands, the potential to look crappy is high.

I just cut the feet off and sewed on the binding from the ends of old sweatshirt arms.  My son wouldn't wear footed pjs as an added bonus this let him wear them months longer and no on could tell they hadn't been made that way.
