Remote Keyless Deadbolt
« on: October 02, 2017, 02:00:27 PM »
Hi,

I just replaced our front door and the door handles. No deadbolt yet on the front door. My car has remote keyless entry and I just walk up to it with the key in my pocket and the door opens. I would like to do the same for my home. I can't find a deadbolt that works this way. I see keypads & phone options, but neither of those seems any easier than just taking out a key. Anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks.

-Brian

Looks like the top picks options here have some form of keyless entry that doesn't involve directly interacting with your phone. The Kwikset allows you to just touch the deadbolt housing to open it (provided that your phone is in proximity, like in your pocket/bag), and the other two have some form of auto-unlock when you approach.

Let us know what you find! I like the idea of a smart lock but don't know that the cost justifies the added convenience.

Thanks. This is just what I'm looking for. Price/Convenience is probably not worth it but we've done a lot of remodeling and I want to throw something in for my geek factor. I didn't like the keyless on my Prius at first, but I've grown quite fond of it over time.

I really like the Schlage. It doesn't work exactly like you want, but it does allow you to tell Siri to unlock it for you and that works great. That way you don't have to use the key pad.

Be careful with Siri unlocking your door.

I find this interesting, I'll have to investigate. I had to install the app on my phone and link it and it won't allow more than one phone connected everyone else has an 8 digit key code.

I think most of the electronic keypads allow what you're looking for.  Search for the ability to do "GeoFencing", so that when your smartphone is within a certain number of feet of the door, it will automatically unlock.

My lock provides this ability (and it's integrated with my security system), but I like having multiple safety zones because stolen phones / ambushes / push-ins are not completely unheard of in my city.

I love my Schlage Connect Camelot. I am a  SmartThings (ST) user and big into Home Automation. I installed this smart deadbolt and connected it to my SmartThings hub. I use my phone as the "Presence" sensor. Each time I leave the house ST locks the deadbolt automatically. Each time I arrive within 35ft or so, the door unlocks automatically. I personally don't use the "unlock" feature but in your case, this is the right solution if that's what you want. But beware, Home Automation is a bottomless pit. You might end up spending more money than you'd want to. There is literally no end to it. Do i cautiously.

Whatever you decide on, search google and youtube for ways it can be bypassed or opened surreptitiously.

There are a ton of locks on the market today that, if you know the trick, or can look it up online, can be opened without the proper key or credentials.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
