Push mower engine repair - oil leaking out
« on: May 25, 2017, 01:57:56 PM »
So... I got a little 4.5HP mower I saw on my way home from work. About 90% through the edge work on my front yard, it started to sputter and spit out white smoke, and black oil dribbled down the side. Could this be something I disassemble and repair myself? Or might it be terminally ill?

Is it a vertical shaft or horizontal shaft motor?  Could you take a picture as to where the oil is coming from?

Did you put in too much oil?  It probably doesn't take the full quart.

I did not add any oil. But perhaps there was too much in before I mowed. (I was mowing for maybe 30 minutes before the smoke/oil.)

I have no idea what direction the shaft is in the motor.

Here are more photos than your body has room for:

That's a vertical shaft motor - the blade is run directly from the motor shaft, which sticks through the deck.

Clean it up and figure out where the oil is coming from.  The only likely place on the side of the motor would be the air intake (which has a crankcase vent tube feeding it, usually).

Check/change the oil - overfull can certainly cause foaming and puking oil overboard.

But those engines are pretty much disposable - if it's a rings issue, it's probably also a bearing issue, and it's toast.

That said, if it runs for a while, feel free to use it.  I've got an old string trimmer with a worn out motor that goes through oil and the rings are bad enough that if I tip it to work on the string bits, it'll smoke for a while on startup.  Meh.  It runs.  I'll replace the motor eventually.

Clean it up for sure.  I am thinking this kind of looks like a normal amount of oil build up on an older mower.

Ha - the oil/sludge pictured is normal build-up. The "event" was an actual small stream of oil dripping down onto the deck and running along it, all while the mower spewed big bellows of white smoke, while sputtering and struggling.

Right. Figure out where that stream came from. I'd guess the air filter housing from an over active crankcase breather.
