Pool Fence for Toddler - a DIY job?
« on: May 01, 2014, 04:23:16 PM »
Is installing a pool fence a diy job or is a professional recommended?

If so, we are looking for something that is very safe. Any kits out there?

For me I would try to DIY but I believe my jurisdiction requires inspections for pool fences which would help me do it correctly.  Definitely do not want to cut any corners in this area and my inspectors were awesome (when I built my house) at helping me interpret the code.

In my area any pool more than 24" deep requires a fence with a locking gate.  No stipulations on materials, etc.  I would do it myself in your position.  But a quote or two from fence companies may help you decide.

Depending on where you live, talking to the inspection office could be helpful or a nightmare.    Still, they should be able to have the specs on what the fence requires.

Is this just going to be a short fence around the pool area, or are you doing a 6 foot privacy fence around the property?    The former will obviously be a lot easier than the latter.

A short fence, such as this, http://www.amazon.com/EZ-Guard-Safety-Pool-Fence-Black/dp/B002QRMKFI

my wife and i built our own fence around a 20x40' inground pool. we used the white, vinyl picket style fence and installed the posts by renting a gas powered post hole digger. mixed our quick-crete for one post at a time, set them and then cut the fence sections to length, screwed them to the posts, set up the gate similarly.
the whole job took us a few weekends to complete but was worth it in the end. potential problem: we didn't install the pool so didn't know exactly where the underground piping lay, only that it was at least 18" down. we put our posts about 15" deep to avoid wrecking a supply or return pipe.
one benefit of relatively shallow post holes, the fence could be removed and sold later on when the kids are older. we had a chain link fence all around the peremiter of our property per code, so we weren't worried about a random person falling into the pool.

good luck!

Well the site says it's a diy job that installs with a hammer drill.    To me, that means I can do it myself AND I have a great excuse to buy a hammer drill (tool fetishist here).    That looks like something that's pretty easily diy.

Still, have you considered just installing a short picket fence around the pool?    It will last longer and it's still a job you can do yourself.    I don't have a pool, but my parents put one in in 1986.    When we left the house 6 years later the picket fence was still in great shape.   I wouldn't be surprised if it's still there now.    I think it looks better than plastic net personally, and it will probably be the same price or less than the product you linked to.

You got me thinking and I looked around and found some different designs. A glass pool fence I think looks sharp, but it quite expensive. Is there a way to get the cost down?
