Pest Control - Is it a DIY thing?
« on: February 08, 2017, 12:49:38 PM »
Hey Everyone, new homeowner here. As spring approaches (at least here in the south it is approaching) I was looking at the typical costs for Terminx or Orkin pest control services. It looks like it runs between $300-500/year.

I've watched pest control people at the apartment when I rented. It seems like the process only takes about 10 minutes to walk the perimeter and spray. And this happens maybe 2-3x/year. This seems like an easy place to find some DIY savings...anyone have experience with doing this task themselves?

Are there any folks who skip pest control altogether until they see a problem? I assume this one of those "ounce of prevention worth a pound of cure" things, but in the back of my mind, I wonder if I might just be a sucker ...

I'm curious to hear your experiences and opinions!

Homeowning and renting DIY pest control are two separate beasts, I've learned. It feels practically impossible to DIY it when you are renting and are connected to neighbors. If they don't care about prevention, then the pests will wander into your place too.

I owned a house for ~5 years (don't own now - I hope to again soon) and the only ongoing "pest" problem I had was crickets would get into my basement at night sometimes. They would ultimately die if they stayed too long because there was nothing for them to eat. I didn't really see the need to try to kick them out because they weren't breeding in the house, negatively impacting the structure itself (like termites might), or trying to eat any food. They also weren't exactly being attracted to anything in particular.

I did occasionally get field mice in the house. I had then (and still do) a pet cockatiel so felt uncomfortable at the idea of spraying or laying out any poisons. What I did instead was trap the mouse in a room and vacuum it up with the ShopVac and dump its dazed self out way, way down the street. I only had this happen maybe twice, and it was a single mouse each time, so I didn't have to deal with trying to get out a whole family - thank goodness.

I once got ants. They were attracted by something in the kitchen. I can't recall what now. You can mix water and dish soap to clean up their scent trail and then use vinegar to deter them. Again - that's a non-poison, pet-friendly solution that works well. Once I did that and made sure to keep the kitchen clean of anything that might attract them, ants never came in again.

I never had a roach problem in the house I owned. But I've always tried to keep the kitchen clean, food put away, and not keep trash that has food scraps in it in the house for too long.

I never paid for pest services. I absolutely would have if I had termites or something though.

I spray every spring when the weather starts warming up and once or twice more over the summer. Can usually tell when it's time to reapply because we start getting ants in the house. domyownpestcontrol.com is where I get my stuff, they have articles and videos that show you how to use everything and what to do to get rid of whatever pest your dealing with. I've used CY kick for basic all around pest control and even did my own termite eradication when they found a way in last summer. Used Termidor SC and baits for that and got rid of them in no time, saved a bunch of money there!.

Thanks for the feedback Redbird and Tallen! It sounds like both of you have had good results just handling it yourselves. I'll definitely look into domyownpestcontrol.com

I love the wealth of knowledge and experience on this forum.

I've done it both ways and I get much better results by hiring it done. The reason that pest control companies got better results is their use much stronger chemicals than I can buy. (That can be good or bad.) I had ant problems at our last house and battled them for years with everything under the sun and many times during the year. I finally hired it done and for $100, the local pest control company came and spent 10 minutes spraying the perimeter of the house and any visible ant hills in the yard. I was ant free for almost two years. After that, I hired them every other year to do the same thing.

Rufus, what pests are common in your area?  My only experience is dealing with ants.  I have success in keeping food sources away from the walls (inside and outside) and when I find a nest, I dig it up with a shovel and pour a large pot of boiling water on it.  I do that as needed, once or twice a year, and it's kept them from getting in the house.  I've had them find my patio garden though, and can't pour boiling water on that!  So I got some of the cheap ant traps you can buy anywhere (poison), and cleaned the area to remove their hormone trails.  No more problem.

I live in North Carolina. I most commonly see ants and roaches. I haven't really seen many bugs in the house yet, maybe one random bug per week, but it's still pretty chilly some mornings. I expect the traffic it will pick up as it grows warmer.

There will also be a lot of mosquitoes in the summer, but I'm not interested in spraying for those.

You can buy termidor off the interwebs relatively cheap and spray outside for ants. It's bad to the bone.

I have never used a "professional" pest control service. It literally is doing 10 minutes of research to pick a spray and then another 10 minutes walking around your yard.

Mostly we have crickets, spiders, and maybe the occasional scorpion, depending on where in the city you are. Spraying once every 3 months or so will do it.

Get you a bottle of Talstar, its the same thing the pros use and is inexpensive, easy to use, and works great.  I've used it in swampy climates and in frozen tundra to ward of bugs.

I keep up my termite inspection contract. It's something home shoppers want to see around where I live. I used to get the quarterly spray for other pests, but I dropped that at least a year ago and haven't had any problems. I have the stuff to spray, in case I do.

I've DIY'd ants, roaches, and rats with off the shelf poisons and traps. Keeping crumbs cleaned up and door seals tight does the rest.

I too keep a termite contract though. However, I might consider dropping it if I thought I could DIY it. I had no trouble getting a termite contract for my old house right before selling it.

We don't hire out any pest control, and only address problems as they come up.  Our main pests are house centipedes, ants, and we once had a problem with drain flies.  We trap and release the house centipedes because they eat other bugs but DW won't go to sleep if she knows one is in the house.  Bait traps for ants.

The drain fly problem turned out to be a plumbing problem that needed fixing.  I actually called a pest control company and they asked what we'd done already and they said that's what they'd do too and we shouldn't pay them to come out.  We've used the do your own pest control site along with Amazon for supplies.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
