Making bubble wrap window insulation not look terrible?
« on: December 20, 2014, 10:43:03 AM »
I don't really care what it looks like from the inside of the house, but I don't want to be "that guy" on my street.  Did a test run of bubble wrap insulation on my garage door windows and it looks absolutely horrible from outside.  I've got various aluminized tapes and metal pieces, but then instead of ugly bubble wrap, I'd have shiny aluminum.  While it might look better, it would also prevent any heat from coming in.  I'd like to find a compromise for the Winter that lets heat in, then keeps it in, all while not looking like a terrible hack.  :-)

Ideas?

Why does it look absolutely horrible? I'd stand back and analyze it. I have bubble wrap on the glass next to my front door - I put it on with clear double sided tape, and it looks quite nice to both me and SO. I made sure I had a clean piece (all the bubbles still there, no tears), and pulled it tightly so it has no wrinkles. It did have wrinkles at first, and didn't look good, but after the wrinkles were gone it was fine.

I did it to have a background for my Christmas trees that I made out of fabric and stuck to the glass. Maybe some sort of decorative effect on the glass would help?

Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/3M-Indoor-Window-Insulator-5-Window/dp/B00002NCJI?

Can be less expensive at non-hardware stores.

You could just insulate the windows on the other three sides but leave the front windows alone.
