Make-Your-Own-Lotion - Okay in the Summer?
« on: January 23, 2015, 06:10:33 PM »
I've recently begun to make my own lotion: olive oil, coconut oil, maybe some vitamin E and some beeswax from our bees. It works great in the winter, and I know I can increase the coconut oil to make it firmer when the weather warms up.

But the warm weather brings bugs, and the bugs are what have me worried. I assume I'll smell pretty good to the bugs, since I'll be coated with olive oil and coconut oil. Do you know of any lotion recipes that don't attract bugs? (I live in the US in the midwest.)

Thanks!

I'd be hesitant to just increase the coconut oil in the summer - it still melts at a fairly low temperature. Adding additional beeswax, and subbing some of the olive oil for some Shea butter will give you a more shelf stable product - but there are limits - I keep mine in the fridge in the summer.

There are lots of Essential oils you can add to lotions to repel bugs. Catnip is great, as is citronella, clove, lemon grass, rosemary, eucalyptus, lavender.
