Lost Clear Finish on bathroom sinks
« on: December 10, 2013, 08:17:24 PM »
One of my sinks in the bathroom has lost its clear finish.  Since this has happened it gets some mold and such where the finish is gone in a few days after cleaning.

The only product I have seen which is a clear coat is this, http://www.resurfacing.com/products_i7898827.html?catId=295731. I'm hoping to find some alternate product which is more cost effective and smaller in size, as I'm doing a small area.

Is there any reason not to just replace the sink? You can find them for free on craigslist in my area, unless you're looking for some specific style. But even then it's a cheap and easy DIY

It's one of those all in one sink, countertop models which means it's not so easy to replace and there another sink on the other wall matching it. it's in pretty shape except the finish is gone.

Is it cultured marble?  I've had some amount of luck just sanding that with finer and finer (and I mean superduper fine) wet sand paper.  But: I'd try it on a not-so-visible area before I went at it.  (Mine was badly stained.  I had nothing to lose.)

Yes, it is cultured marble.

Mine is not stained, so I'm hoping just to redo the coat. But, I will keep that in mind if I do have a stain to fix.

Wet sand and buffing would probably do it.

This is what I was trying to say.   With my stain, I had to aggressively sand the marble to remove the stain.  This sanding took off the finish.  I replaced the finish by using progressively finer sand paper/polish until it was gone.  You'll have to get to ultra fine (like 1000+ grit) to get to the point where it regains the finish.

Car wax. Something with carnauba wax seems to be the recommended as being the best. As long as you have no grout for it to get into, it should bring back the shine, and provide a protectant against staining. The sites I've found recommend doing it about 2-3 times a year.

I did this with a all-in-one sink vanity top that was older than dirt (eventually hope to replace), and it looked pretty good. Just don't get it into grout or tight seams or have a soft toothbrush handy to scrub it out (and try to avoid the ones with a color additive if so - the color stains grout slightly)

I'd do a spot test first, but I was personally happy with it.
