Leveling Studs For Drywall
« on: December 04, 2016, 07:36:28 AM »
I tore down a section of a wall that was lath and plaster. The lath and plaster combined come out from the studs about an inch. So i could install 2 layers of 1/2 inch drywall to make it flush with the plaster, or install some filler and use only 1 layer of drywall. I think I'd rather do just 1 layer of drywall if it can be done. I'm thinking my options are:

1. Install new 2x4s adjacent to the old studs that extrude 1/2 inch.
2. Use shims
3. Use plywood?

Any recommendations? I also have the same situation for a ceiling in another room.

Thanks!

These are 1/2'x2"x45" dense carboard shims that are designed basically for your situation. Might see if they work - should be able to pick them up at most home improvement stores.

Advice from our drywall dude was to strip out the rest of the wall and gain the half inch. No change in cost, better quality job.

Well the rest of the wall in this case is appx 135 sq ft. That's a lot of mess.

I think you'd be happier with the results if you redid the whole thing.

Shim the existing studs with some 1/2" plywood ripped into strips.

That's exactly what I did. Seems to working out OK.
