LED Dimmer Switch Selection
« on: January 19, 2017, 02:27:27 PM »
Do you have a dimmer switch that you lovingly researched and are happy with?  I'd love to hear about it.  I've been waiting for a few years for an LED dimmer switch to pop on the market that I'd want to use throughout my house.  The list of requirements was eliminating everything out there:

  • 3-pole
  • Strong LED compatibility list and latest standards compliance
  • Good reliability
  • Simple/standard interface (preferably slider)
  • Locator light

I'm at the point where I'm ready to give up on the locator light and just use a dedicated nightlight in our dark hallway.  That should dramatically open up the space of potential candidates.  Any and all suggestions welcome.

Thanks!

Following.
The electrician for my house build is installing LED dimmers for me soon. I'll check on his recommendation for you when I see him next.

As a. Electrician I have yet to be dissatisfied with Lutron product. I have used everything from their cheapest old style dimmers  to  automated control systems for commercial spaces, with zero issues. I'm sure they have something you can use.

I used Lutron as well. Matched my other ones, but really no complaints.

The Lutron Maestro is a favorite of mine but you'll want to check compatibility with your LEDs. It's a couple years old now and still working great, throws off no RF hash and ramps up/down brightness to your preset, much like interior lights in today's cars.

I have had nothing but success with Lutron as well - I hate the cost but they are worth it in my opinion.  Some of their more sophisticated lights get pretty large (RF and Wifi dimming) and they start to become hard to fit in the box.  We recently moved into a newer house and they whole house was done with Lutron.  I was happy to see that.

Another for Lutron products but a lot has to do with the LED's compatibility with ANY dimmer.
Lutron has the Maestro series which has many cool features but is more susceptible to problems with compatibility as well as sensitive to static shock. The Ariadna series just has a small slider of to the side of the toggle and it seems to work well and be more compatible with many LED sources.

Those are the models I chose. Work great. Never did like the newer big 'button' style light switches, or the big sliders. One area I may be a bit old fashioned.

I have one and only one dimmer.  Everyone raves about Lutron switching and Cree bulbs.  That's what I've got.  It must be the Ariadna series... as it has the small slider.  These are the noisiest, buzziest things I've ever seen.

I did have to try another bulb model when i put mine in. I wound up with store brand "extended life", they use thicker filliment that combats that 60cycle hum. Might try something along those lines. The standard bulbs i used were very noisy , so i feel your pain.
