laptop charging port- pin from charger stuck way inside!
« on: April 04, 2015, 02:38:25 PM »
So, long story short, the pin from the ac adapter for my laptop broke off and is now stuck way inside the charging port.

I think I can take the laptop apart to replace the charging port.  But I'm not positive that I need to replace it.  If there is a way to push the pin out of the port from the back, I don't need the part.  I just need to get in there and move the pin.

It's a bit of a process to take the laptop apart to get to the charging port, so I'd like to know before starting if the part is necessary or not.

It's an HP Pavillion dv4.  Does anyone know if the back of the charging port is accessible to push the stuck pin back out?

Why not try to remove it from the outside?

Get your hands on a sharp, strong "T" pin, (like used to hang things on your corporate cubical wall) and try to STAB the broken off pin inside the jack, and see if you can get enough grab to then pull it out. The odds are that it's hollow, and you'll be able to do this.

thanks for the tip... it's not hollow and actually this pin method is how it ended up "way inside" instead of just "inside."  You can't even see the pin from the outside.

The longer part of the story is that we were on vacation when the pin broke off of the charging cord.  I used a pencil eraser to shimmy it into the charging port, then put the rest of the charging cord in.  (It was the 2nd day of a week long vacation and I was setting up the older kid to watch a movie I'd promised.  This is a very special event, our 6 year old gets nearly zero screen time.)  It worked.  And for the rest of vacation and the last few days home it has worked.  I am currently waiting for the new power cord to arrive, and I figured when it came I would put a dab of superglue at then end of a sewing needle, touch it to the pin, wait for the bond, and then pull the needle with the pin attached out.  (A method of removing something small from something small I learned from a friend in med school- she had a college student in the ER with a pencil eraser that had broken off in his ear, and used a similar method to remove it...)

Anyway, the pin and the remainder of the cord just were not making contact today, so I tried to use a couple of sewing needles to work it out a bit, and just made the problem way worse.  (I didn't want to use the superglue method fearing that the super glue would coat the end of the pin that needs to connect to the cord, rendering the current resources useless.)  Now the pin is waaay in the hole, and I've further rigged the power situation with a section of very small paper clip that is bridging the gap between the broken pin and the remainder of the cord.  It's working, but it's a total band aid and I want a permanent solution...

If nobody knows, I guess I will go through and take this whole thing apart and see if it is possible to push the pin out.  (Seriously, it's ridiculous how much of this laptop needs to come apart to access this part.  It's the worst.  I have to take nearly everything out- hard drive, wireless card, memory, keyboard, screen/cover, speakers... everything!)  This will be my first time pulling such a stunt, so wish me luck.

You'll be fine.  I've taken apart plenty of laptops, including power jack repairs/replacements.  Once you're past the plastic clips that hold the top and bottom shells together, it's easy.  It sounds like you already found the hardware manual, so just follow the steps and you'll be fine.  And make sure you ground yourself :).  And yes, it's very annoying that such a critical (and frequently broken) part is located in such an inconvenient place.

Success!

Got the part off ebay for $4, took the laptop apart, and successfully replaced the charging port.

Youtube on my work machine was open, there was a great video from "TimsComputerRepair" that I followed.  (With a lot of pausing and rewinding...)  My 3 year old was napping, and my 6 year old was on hand to snap pics of different steps so I could ensure that I put it back together properly.  I kept all the screws organized by taping them to a piece of paper and documenting on the paper where they came from.

I didn't have a hardware manual, but the youtube video was more than adequate.  The hardest part for me was taking the hard drive out... it was just such a tight fit, it was hard to physically push out.  The worst part was when the cheap screwdriver I was using starting breaking down on me... 2 of the 'flanges' of the phillips head were chipping away, so I had to hunt down another small screwdriver, which I luckily found on my "midnight minichamp" swiss army knife.

As a bonus, we had been having troubles with the touch pad, and that also seems to be resolved!  I didn't fix it intentionally...

Congratulations!  You're now more qualified to work on computers than 98% of the population :)  Doesn't it feel great?
