The last few days the lights in my kitchen have been flickering or barely putting out any light. I replaced all four of them tonight only to discover the same symptoms. The real craziness started when I started removing or swapping them. I started getting light again when I only had 2 or 3 plugged in. One section would be bright while the other was dim or not shining at all and they switch places with which pair was working. Right now the original bulbs are shining bright - but only one pair are in use. Could there be a problem with the wiring in the setup? Both sets of lights are tied to the same switch.

It’s probably the ballast going bad. Try replacing that.

I wouldn't put any money into old fluorescent light fixtures, replace them with LED's.out
They put out lots more light and burn a fraction of the electricity.

What about putting in LED 'fluorescents'?

I'd convert your fixture to LED using either option 1 (rewire with LED tubes) or option 3 (remove tubes and install LED strip light) from this page:
