Jet Bar Clamps
« on: September 15, 2017, 03:39:28 PM »
I have come across a seller who is offering me eight 40", six 24", and eight 12" bar clamps for less than $400.  These go for 3-4x brand new.

I am slowly but surely building my workshop.  I would be crazy not to pull the trigger right?

Seems overkill. I get by with just four bar clamps.

What sizes Gooki?  I'm think four 40" and four 24" should do it.  12" clamps can be acquired for cheap if needed.

Big ones. 2x 1800mm, 2x 1220mm sash clamps.

If I was doing it again I would have gone with 4x 1800s. For other clamping just a variety of 12 inch F clamps.

In all fairness the jet clamps are well rated. Maybe offer to buy just some, or buy the lot and sell of  the ones you don't need.

Buy them.  I love clamping with these - everything nice and square.

I don't have experience with Jet brand of bar clamps but I probably have around thirty bar clamps in my garage and another thirty of the handheld squeeze type and honestly, I have always felt I can never have too many clamps with neck deep on a project.  Every single clamp I have bought used at auctions. The nice thing about clamps is they are fairly indestructible so I would have no problem paying half price if they were in good shape, much less the 25% price you are being quoted.  My vote would be to buy them if you like the brand, can afford them and have a need for them.

I thought of this post this morning as I was gluing and clamping up the project to dry. You can never have enough clamps.

I'm afraid you're wrong.  As lthenderson just showed, there is no such thing as too many clamps :D

OP, I think you're first instinct was right, buy them all! You can never have too many clamps, that's $20 per clamp, and you can easily make money selling what you don't use. You're lucky to have gotten the listing.

Update: So I mulled it over all day and then pulled the trigger.  He ended up giving me the whole set for $320, which I think is a screaming deal.  With good care, these should last a lifetime.  They sure are heavy.  I figure these will balance out my cheap-o Harbor Freight clamps.  Woodworking tools are addicting.  Need to be careful not to go overboard.  Still need a router, planer, jointer.

Umm, yes this is a screaming deal no duh. Anyone who says it isn't is either an idiot, or an imposter woodworker. I was just laminating some oak boards, ran out of clamps, remembered your post, and was annoyed I hadn't found the craigslist post first!

While we are on the topic - these guys have a nice how-to for making your own bar clamps and have some pretty brilliant projects using bent-wood laminations: https://youtu.be/DUO-TZFmivk

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
