iphone screen replacement
« on: January 31, 2015, 10:53:15 AM »
Does anyone have a recommendation for an iphone screen repair kit for an iphone 5?  My wife dropped it.  I see a bunch on Amazon, but the reviews have me unsure of what to pick.  I like being off contract so we don't want to do an upgrade.

I did it on a IPod... take a kit with tools included, from a seller that look ok. Remember, glass only doesn't exist

Before buying the parts, watch a youtube video on how to do it. They keep making it harder and harder.  Usually the bigger the assembly you buy, the easier the fix will be and the less likely you are to mess it up.  The 3s was super easy, the 4 harder to do, and the 5 I have not seen yet but I bet it is even more complicated.  Keep in mind that the replacement glass is not of the same quality and will likely break a LOT easier than the original.  Based on my personal experience of having gone through 6 screens over 3 years with my old 3s, I have deemed it not-that-frugal to DIY the repair. of iPhone screens.

Go to ifixit. They sell the parts and have tutorials on how to do it. My wife broke her's just last week. I have replaced parts in Android phone, but after looking through the tutorial I said fuck apple and told her to take it to the Apple Store. The parts are at least $65, and at some point you have to apply (gentle!) heat to loosen some glue.. Apple charge $130 for it and will warranty it.

I installed it yesterday.  Took me a little over an hour after factoring kid interruptions.  It seems to work fine so far.
