Ikea Expedit Bookcase: Reuse Options?
« on: September 11, 2016, 02:53:43 PM »
I have an Ikea Expedit Bookcase, 7'x7'.  After being disassembled/reassembled four times (during moves) and some light water damage, it is no longer strong enough to reassemble.  The peg holes simply rip out.  I can put this out for heavy trash day, but I would rather upcycle it into another project.  Any ideas?

Get some wooden match sticks or toothpicks, fill the holes with elmers white glue or wood glue if you have it, then put in the wood pieces and cut them or break them off flush with the wood. Let them dry up a bit and the the screws will have something to bite when you reassmble. I've done this many times on many different projects including door hinges. Good luck!

Not sure what to do with it, but maybe my experience with attaching 3 smaller units into 1 and hanging them on the wall can help.  The shelves are fully particle board, so definitely reusable.  The thicker outer part has solid particle board ends (last 1.5") and the rest is corrugation (like cardboard).  Cutting the thicker parts to a smaller size and reusing would be a challenge.
