Psycho garage door opener
« on: March 08, 2019, 03:35:59 PM »
So I have the standard two car garage with a garage door and automatic garage door opener.  There's a remote in my car, and a remote by the door that goes into the house.

The battery in the remote by the door wore out so I replaced it about a week ago.  Ever since that time, the garage door sporadically opens and closes on its own.  The sporadic independent and unwanted behavior seems to go in spurts - it will be fine for hours, and then it will open and close multiple times within a minute or two.

The remote in my car works fine.  The remote by the door works fine if I find the exact right spot on the button to press.  The "exact right spot" issue has been around for a long while and is related to the plastic inside getting worn down.

All equipment is original to the house and so is about 15 years old.

How do I fix this?

Of lesser interest, what is causing this?

I'm guessing when you replaced the battery you created an intermittent short that is causing the erratic behavior. You could mess around with it for awhile, but my suggestion would be if it keeps happening to replace the remote.

That makes sense.  I think I even recall seeing some of that battery crustiness on the circuit board.

It is 15 years old and they don't even make that model of remote any more.  I'll probably fiddle with it and then end up replace it.

Thanks!!
