Make sure it's completely dry, including blowing out the lines, etc.  After that, I'd put some baking soda in it and call it a day.

Or, just sell it.  I sold a dishwasher recently for ~$150 with minimal effort (IOW, might've been able to get more, just wanted it out of my garage so it was "priced to sell".

I agree with selling it. Storing it for up to several years not only costs you money, it's likely to lose most of its value over that time. Ten year-old dishwashers aren't a hot commodity.

I would also get rid of it, it takes up a lot of space for what it is and there are parts that will discolor and even fail (electronics) in time.

Store it on Craigslist.  Don't pay for the depreciation.

The thing that's stopping me from selling it is that I don't have a car or driver's license, which makes procuring another Craigslist dishwasher down the road difficult. By the time I pay for a Craigslist dishwasher and a man with a van to move it, I feel like I might as well have just stashed the not very valuable old dishwasher in my basement.

I have a small trailer that I pull around with my car, and if one of my friends asked me to help him pick something up, I would gladly do it in exchange for a 6-pack.  Total cost: <$10.  Surely you have acquaintances that like beer.  Or when you are ready to buy another one in several years, maybe the technology has improved and the prices have come down enough that it would actually be more frugal to buy a brand new high efficiency dishwasher that will pay for itself with the lower energy requirements.  You might even be able to negotiate free delivery.  Plus you don't have to worry about the old one with all the deteriorating parts, possible musty smell that might never go away, sitting in your garage hoping there are no natural disasters that destroy it, etc, etc, etc.

I've been pondering the "completely dry" advice and I'm really not sure whether that is best.  I think if I had to store it, I would use a hose and bucket as temporary connections so that I could run it every so often rather than have it sitting dry.  I guess it partly depends on climate.  I once had to retube a brand new haematology analyser because it had sat in customs for six months in a tropical climate - while the tubes would have been fine in daily use for years, just a few months dry and they had perished.

Personally, I would sell it!

Sell it on craigslist. The minerals in the water will calcify and you may end up with brittle gaskets since it won't be used.  Take the quick cash. I bought a bosch from Lowes over the weekend that was a special order return for $223 and put it in a rental because the price was that good.  Somethings are not meant to be stored.  Pressure washers require running a solution through the pumps before storing as an example.

Sell it.  Odds are good that it will not do well in storage, and not last very long as a replacement dishwasher when the other one dies anyway.  Also, I've had dishwashers that ran for longer than a decade without so much as a hiccup, so it could take a while.  YMMV.
