Title: Help us Renovate our Laundry Room
Post by: BiggerFishToFI on January 26, 2019, 06:25:25 PM
We want to DIY update our laundry room and need some help. The room is in a daylight basement and the walls are all concrete with some chipping and multiple colors. The ceiling is joists that used to support ceiling tiles and are trying to figure out the best way to redo that. We were also thinking about epoxying the concrete floor. Then paint the walls/ceiling and replace the utility sink. Another thought was building the wall with the sewer drain and laundry utilities out ~6 inches and hanging drywall there as well to cover all of that up. Also a radon mitigation system was recently installed and shown in one of the pics attached.

Any thoughts/comments/suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

I'd probably drywall the walls and ceiling as long as you don't have moisture issues.  You could even insulate a bit.  Epoxy sounds perfect since the only other option really is tile.

Probably the cheapest is drywall (if you feel comfortable with doing drywall work). Otherwise the sky in the limit in terms of ceiling systems and their cost.

Epoxy is probably the simplest and most resilient for the floor, at least in my opinion for a basic basement.

I would be careful about that with your concrete walls; they offer little-to-no insulation value. If you live in a cold climate (sub-freezing temperatures) you already shouldn't have plumbing in exterior walls, but you placing it against uninsulated concreted and then sealing that behind drywall is probably to risk freezing.

My house does have some plumbing against an uninsulated concreted basement wall that is directly exposed to air at sub-freezing temperatures and for going on 30 years it hasn't frozen. I believe that is mostly due to the warmer air in the basement. I would not create an air tight space around it slightly insulated by drywall and risk it freezing.

Also if there is any moisture/drying to the inside without first addressing it or adding a moisture barrier you there could be mold issues down the line.

Just make sure to use green-board/moisture resistant drywall.
