Has anyone used a tub refinishing kit?
« on: November 15, 2020, 01:49:54 AM »
Our tenants recently moved out, and apparently tried to paint the bottom of the old claw foot tub at some point. I see Rustoleum tub refinishing kits are available, and wondered if anyone had tried them. Any other suggestions? I think anything would be an improvement.

Kind of.

We tried it on a few spots it never really worked. Usually when they are refinished they are taken to a factory and cleaned and sprayed by a professional. I would likely only do it in a lipstick on the pig situation to sell the house.

Good luck, YMMV.

We had a professional company come in and reglaze the tub ( looked amazing) and they spray painted all the old ugly ( but stable and really only 20 year old) tiles around the tub. it cost 1100.00 and did make  the bathroom appear remodeled everything wa bright white. There was chemicals used and they did stink up the house good for a week. Had to not touch it for 3 days after. till if I had a rental I would do it. This was done for us as part of the sale of the home, getting it to look more updated.

I used a two-component epoxy-based paint designed specifically for this purpose (if needed, I can give you the name, but I bought it in Europe for about 25-30EUR including S&H) and it worked like a charm - as for any paint job, you need to prepare the surface. This means washing, drying, degreasing, sanding, fixing the chips by some kind of bondo, sanding, wiping with lint-free cloth. When you have a quality dust-free surface, you're ready to go. After a year and a half, it is as good and strong as a new one.

I have had tubs coated by a professional and I have used the two part Rust-Oleum tub refinish kit on a cast iron sink myself with good success.  I believe you might have to scrape off any paint they used, but I'm not 100% on that point.  For the tubs that were done professionally they have been continuously used (by tenants) for many years, as for the sink I did I can't say as I haven't seen that sink since.
