Has anyone ever fixed squeaky floor under carpet?
« on: September 02, 2016, 08:30:01 AM »
Hi All,
I have a corner of my bedroom that squeaks pretty badly when I walk over it.  I googled it and looks like you screw down into the joyces through the carpet.  Has anyone ever done this?  If so, did it work and is it as easy as they make it sound?  Thanks in advance.

I have used a version of the following:

https://www.amazon.com/Squeeeeek-No-More-Contractor-Pack/dp/B009HXAFLA/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1472828036&sr=8-4-fkmr2&keywords=squeaky+floor+carpet+system

It works extremely well and I've pretty much did the entire carpeted portions of my house. Here is what I have found works the easiest. Find the direction of the joists and then find the joist under the carpet at each end of the room. This takes some probing from the tool to find it the first time. Put a screw in there using the jig but don't break it off. Go to the other end of the room on the same joist and repeat. Then using a tape measure, repeat putting in screws across the joists by putting one in every 16 inches which is standard joist spacing. You should have a line of screws at each end of the room on 16 inch spacing. Next, take some kite string and string it between the screws so that it goes in the direction of the joists and weave back and forth. This gives you visual guidance of where each joist is. Finally, using the jig, go up and down the strings putting in screws. I usually then break the screws off with a hammer with the string intact so I can find all the screw pieces.

I did this two years ago and thus far, the floors still have no squeaks and no one is any wiser that I did the repair.

Thanks a ton for your response, looks like I now have a project for this weekend.
