Hair cutting scissors?
« on: December 14, 2014, 02:34:46 PM »
Anyone got any advice on getting a pair of hair cutting scissors for a reasonable price? Any tips on knowing what pair is going to be any good? I'm New Zealand based.

I don't know how well you need a hair cut to look, I trim the base of my neck with my straight razor (seen barbers using razor to cut hair but no way I'm going to try myself). For the sides, I've been using something like this http://www.tweezersplus.com/scissors/kitchen-drawer-scissors/. I don't know if it is same brand, looks the same but there's no branding on my pair and I picked it up in a walmart years and years ago for some other reason but used it on hair now. I like how one side is blunted, I put that end against head, FYI :).

Do you have a hair cutting school (I forget what they are called) near you? I find items on craigslist often from students that quit from one near my house. Or at end of the year, they have sales that flood the area with supplies.

I don't know what you would consider a reasonable price, but I recently purchased these hair cutting scissors and I'm very happy with them:

Several decades ago I bought a pair like these and have used them (exclusively) for cutting my hair ever since.  They are still sharp: http://www.joann.com/gingher-4in-embroidery-scissors/1785161.html#prefn1=prod_type&start=1&q=scissors&sz=54&srule=price-high-to-low&prefv1=Product

Joanns frequently has coupons that get you 50% off one item, which would make them $15.
