Free Programs for Efficient Cutting?
« on: January 06, 2014, 04:15:30 PM »
I need to cut a large number of small pieces of different dimensions out of larger acrylic sheets.  I'm looking for a program that would help me determine the most efficient cutting pattern to minimize waste.  I've found a few myself, but none that are free.  Any suggestions?

Do you mean how to optimally pack the parts on the sheet so you scrap less material? That's what I'm reading at least.

We use some at work. You won't get them without spending a zillion dollars.

What I'd do is cut miniatures out of paper in the shapes you want cut, and arrange them by hand on a piece of graph paper or something. You'll probably get very close to what the computer would, it'll just take you a bit longer.

Or if you're sending the work out, whoever you're contracting should be able to do it.

If you mean a program to calculate toolpaths for a laser cutter or waterjet, you can use LinuxCNC, but it doesn't sound like that's what you're looking for.

Yes, you understood what I'm looking for correctly.  The project is making acrylic cage protectors for the animal shelter I volunteer at to cut down on germ-swapping between adjacent cages.  I've done a sample cage already, marking the pieces by hand and cutting them out with a jigsaw.  We were pretty happy with the results, so we'd like to do the rest of the cages in the shelter.  There are about 50 rectangular pieces of 5 different sizes.  Obviously, we'd like to waste as little material as possible but it's not worth investing in software for this one project.  Graph paper may be the best solution if there are no free software options.

I've downloaded it, but not used it yet. It was recommended to me on a woodworking website.

Ooo, cool.  I downloaded the free 14 day trial of CutList Plus which will definitely do what I need for this project, but I'll definitely check out MaxCut as well.  I'm sure it's not the last time I'll want to know the best way to cut something up.
