Floating Shelves in Corner
« on: August 28, 2018, 10:10:26 PM »
The wife wants floating shelves in our kitchen like below. Problem is I have no idea what a good way to mount them is. Any ideas?

Oddly enough, all you need are some floating shelf brackets. There are several different kinds. The ones linked below require a dado cut in the shelf to make them invisible. Others have a flatter wider flange which can be nearly invisible assuming your board is wider than the flange but will leave a slight gap between the wall and the shelf. If your wall is nice and flat, I prefer the ones I have linked below.

responded earlier, but seems the forum list 'ate' my response...

Simplest way is to use some flush mount brackets, such as these:
https://www.rockler.com/extra-thin-flush-mount-1-1-2-x-1-3-4?sid=V9146?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=&utm_content=pla&utm_campaign=PL&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIifLb7KmS3QIVhYnICh0aPABYEAQYBCABEgJOTPD_BwE

This works best if your shelves are solid wood and the screws can get a good purchase through them.  If you want them to truly sit flush to the wall you'll need to chizel or router or dremel out a recess in the back of the shelf.

Alternatively, you can mount a strip of 1-by on the wall with a corrosponding dato cut out of hte back of the shelf.  Then the shelf can be glued in place with a couple of brad-nails to hold it until the glue sets.  This will give you by far the best holding power, but is hard to remove without doing some wall repair.

Ikea-type shelves (e.g. "lack") use a bracket that gets mounted onto the wall and then slides into a slot in the back of the shelf, where it is affixed with a couple of screws.  (https://www.ikea.com/us/en/assembly_instructions/lack-wall-shelf__AA-406011-5_pub.pdf)

I am not able to see your picture, but I made some alcove floating shelves with 1/4" plywood and 1x2s. Mount the 1x2s to the wall, nail the plywood on top, and face the front with a 1x2 to add bulk and hide the braces. Stain it and you're finished

These look like the best sturdy option, but how do I slide both the left and right side into the corner?

I'm thinking this is what we'l end up doing. I have a lot of rough hewn 2x12s in the shed and was hoping to use those, and have solid wood. But we'll see.

Buy a 2x8 OR 2x10 or 2x12 ....

Drill a few holes in the back with a 1/2 in drill bit ...

Then with table saw or hand saw, strip a 2 inch wide on the back of the shelf ... buy some 1/2 dowels ...

insert them in the holes and glue them to the strip ... then you can screw the strip to the studs

then you can just slide the rest of the shelf into the dowels.

They are quite sturdy which is why I like them but unfortunately, I missed the corner part and I don't think you can get them to work. They make similar things for corner shelves but they will be visible on the bottom side of the shelf though they are pretty low profile. Then you just sit the shelf on top of them. I suppose you could route a receiving channel into the bottom side of the shelf to make them disappear.

For smaller corner shelves, I have used a Kreg jig to drill pocket holes in the bottom side of the shelf and screw into the studs on both walls but I wouldn't put a lot of weight on it.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
