We recently embarked on "Project Porch" looking to replace the sunken, breaking, wood porch our house came with, with a beautiful flagstone porch to last for years to come.
Upon removal of the planks we discovered that part of the porch was under a concrete slab. (see images).
Now, this would be fine, however, we wanted to put in a storm door and the concrete slab would give the stone a two inch height that we need to clear the door.
Method:
This link provides information about the method we were going to use to put in the flagstone.
http://www.stoneplus.com/DIY/How-To-Build-A-Dry-Flagstone-Patio-s1.pdfIs short, crushed stone and sand.
Challenges:
- While the majority of the porch can be laid using crushed stone and sand, the concrete slab poses a challenge for this method for the remainder of the porch.
- Laying flagstone on top of slab would not give clearance for a storm door as it would increase porch height by about 2 inches which brings us right back to where we started with the wood.
- The foundation of the house is a concrete slab.
Question:
- Can we break up the concrete slab enough to lay the stone in flush with the rest of the porch without disrupting the integrity of the entire foundation of the house?
Thank you for your responses in advance,
