fellow board game/sci-fi geeks - please help!
« on: August 12, 2013, 10:34:29 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I am working on making a "Star Gate" themed version of Catan for my sister for Christmas. Besides building the board and pieces, I'm trying to think of Stargate equivalents for resource cards, the robber and all that.

Here is what is in the original and some ideas I have had so far:
1) Nineteen (19) Terrain Hexes (Tiles). - could base them off of home-words - the nox and alien technology (forest hex) The Tok'ra (allies) and cave terrain. Abydos and naquadah ...
2) Six (6) Sea Frame Pieces. - stars
3) Nine (9) Harbor Pieces. - ?
4) Eighteen (18) Circular Number Tokens (Chits).
5) Ninety-five (95) Resource Cards (Bearing the Symbols for the Ore, Grain, Lumber, Wool, and Brick Resources). Allies, Alien technology, naquadah, ???
6) Twenty-five (25) Development Cards (14 Knight/Soldier Cards, 6 Progress Cards, 5 Victory Point Cards). - No ideas yet
7) Four (4) Building Costs Cards.
8) Two (2) Special Cards: Longest Road & Largest Army. Longest wormhole, largest army may still apply.
9) Sixteen (16) Cities (4 of Each Color Shaped like Churches). bases - either mountains or if incorporating Atlantis - ships)
10) Twenty (20) Settlements (5 of Each Color Shaped like Houses). - mini stargates
11) Sixty (60) Roads (15 of Each Color Shaped like Bars). - bluish and rounded to look like wormholes
12) Two (2) Dice (1 Yellow, 1 Red).
13) One (1) Robber - a goa'uld mothership

Anyone have some ideas? I'd be very grateful!

For #5, what about ZPMs (zero point modulators) and naquadriah.

#6, maybe Jaffa for knights/soldiers since your Robber is the Goa'uld

#3, since harbors are basically ports, maybe make the harbor pieces resemble DHD devices with the trade ratio on it? You'd basically be dialing to a planet with the type of resources you need, so it could work within the theme.

That's all I got for now!

Thanks Joshin!

Love the idea of DHD's for ports and using ZPM's for a resource!

Using Jaffa for knights would be logical too, can't believe I didn't think of it :)

I guess the victory cards could just refer to enemies that were defeated over the years - or specific battles.

Anyone have any favorite specific story arcs, races, or elements of the Stargate world that would be fun to include?

This is an awesome idea, and the idea of making a stargate catan game is amazing.

I would love to see pictures of your completed game when you're finished building it, if you feel like sharing on the forums here. :)

Thanks CupcakeStache :) I'll definitely post links when it is done, it might be more "Spring" then Christmas this year, we'll see!

:-)  Beautiful!

Stone would be an obvious resource need in the original movie, but maybe not so much in the series.

Are you going to be on one planet or in space?

Hi Everyone,

This turned into a way more complicated project then I was expecting. My Hubby likes to be detailed. I have to say though the result is awesome! We ended up doing a riff on "Cities and Knights"

We made all the pieces on the computer and printed them out and cut and glued them all by hand. This was a massive undertaking (I didn't realize quite how many tiny pieces there are!) For the board we spray glued onto foam core and then cut out.

We are now trying to figure out how to make the pieces a little simpler for more copies of the game as it isn't practical to make them the way we did...but they are so cute!

A great big thank you to everyone who offers up their ideas, it was a fun project! Next to get to all those original game design ideas we have had while working on this!

Nice job.   I had the idea of making a board game version of a BB game I used to play online before the interweb was invented by Al Gore.  I forget the name but it was where you pick up elements and put them together to make more complex things...stuff like a snalt

Nice!  I love Catan and although not a Star Gate fan, I'm making my own copy of a financial game called "Aquire" using LEGO bricks.  So kudos to you and your husband for patiently making this awesome version of Catan!

I LOVE Aquire.  I have the original game from some 40, 50 years ago. (sorry OP not hijacking, I promise).  Please show your results in another thread birdman.
