Fancy Filing cabinet for a kitchen
« on: November 15, 2013, 02:35:47 PM »
My wife and I are finishing off a kitchen remodel, an decided that instead of a tiny eat in kitchen, we would rather build a desk out of the same Ikea Nurmerar countertops in the rest of the room, held up by some cabinets with file drawers.

I want to match the rest of the kitchen (doors by Barker cabinets) but I don't want to spend the almost $500 on their cabinet.

If I get the doors (much less) would it be a serious trick to attach them to an existing metal, I found it on the side of the road file cabinet?

Barker  file cabinet: http://www.barkercabinets.com/2-drawer-file-cabinet-letter-sized-files-p/b2drfilecabinet.htm
With the doors to match the rest of the room its around $450.

JUST getting the fronts would be $140 give or take.

The cabinets are all full coverage so whatever size the cheapy cabinet we find will be the size we order from Barker.

Thanks!

I don't think that'd be a problem. Just make sure you pay attention to how the drawer fronts on the cabinet you find are attached to the body of the drawer. If it looks like something you could do with screws into wood, you're good--except that you have to remember the wooden fronts will be much heavier than the aluminum that's on most filing cabinets. If you get a wooden filing cabinet (sometimes you'll find these at antique or architectural salvage stores, or you could get a cheapy particle board/laminate one), that'll be less of an issue and the attachment should be suitable for wood.
