Title: Exhaust smell from heat (car)

I have a 2013 Ford C-Max Energi (plug-in hybrid) with 44,000 miles on it. I bought it in 2016 and it has always had an annoying smell when the engine turns on while the heat is running, a lot like gasoline. I most notice it when the electric heat is running and the engine then turns on. The smell dissipates pretty quickly.

For some reason this hasn’t seemed like a problem until now, but thinking about it now I feel like it’s probably not a good thing to be breathing that, and I confirmed on the model owners’ forum that it’s not standard behavior.

Does anybody have ideas what could be causing this?

Might want to specify it's car related, not indoor furnace related.

I've got a Volt and I'll get some funky smells off the engine if it hasn't run in a while.  It clears quickly enough, and it's apparently moderately common, so I don't let it worry me too much.  Apparently it's just road grime and other stuff burning off the exhaust.
