Energy efficient window coverings
« on: May 01, 2015, 05:27:27 PM »
We have some very old windows - the kind with the built-in storm window - that, in the winter, really aren't very efficient.

In your opinion, mustachians, what sort of window coverings, or combination of window coverings, would cut down on the loss of heat until I can replace them all?  I've researched different kinds of efficient roman shades, thermal drapes, etc....has anyone done this, and what worked best for you?

Thanks.

no advice, but I have the same windows. currently covered with super cheap (and ugly) metal mini blinds. I have the same question, so will be watching for answers!! I'd love to go with a cordless homeycomb shade, but wondering if that is the best option.

I have done everything from insulated curtains, shades and that 3M Plastic to help with the energy efficient of my windows to deal with Chicago winters. But, my windows were draft and went searching for something better.

Thankfully, I did get an idea from a MMM forum member from another thread to look into a fabric called Warm Window that you can get at a fabric store like JoAnn's (use their coupons!).  There is a small investment upfront because the fabric is little more expensive but it has several insulated layers to it with a vapor barrier and it's designed so you can attach a decorative fabric to make a roman shade if you like. (there is a great tutorial on YouTube how to do this that even a beginner sewer could do with no problem).  I like that it's decorative and looks good and wow does it insulate the windows!

I made them for each of my windows and within the first winter season made back my money in energy savings to pay for the fabric.   P.S. I am not a sewer and even I could it with no problem.

P.S. I even use these coverings in the summer for a set of bedroom windows that have a strong western exposure to deflect the heat away, it has made that bedroom much more comfortable in the summer.

I've heard a lot of good things about this company and their products, and my husband are considering getting these in the next year or two. It looks like there is a bit of an upfront cost - as they have to customize these (which are essentially interior storms) to your windows, but the repair cost is very low if any are ever needed. It is important to us to keep the look of our old windows, so this seems like a good solution.
