Hi Yall,

My daughter dropped her Moto G in the toilet!! Pretty sure it is dead - tried the rice trick, no go. We have basic plans, no data for $10 each per month which I got us 3 years ago. Apparently, when you buy a new phone from them you will also end up with a new plan too which is now $15 per month and probably have to port the old number or get a new one.

I am wondering if I could get a used unit of the same type on ebay...there is one on there now that looks good...and put her sim card into it.  Is the SIM card water damaged too? Would that work?

TIA!

How long did you let the phone dry?

You could try popping the sim card in another phone just to see if *anything* is recognized. Usually SIM cards will survive that sort of a thing though.

Seems you just need to pop the sim card in and go through the standard activation process with Republic even when swapping out phones...

24 hrs but it the water was leaking the red dye and we didn't get in the rice until many hrs later.

After more poking around I think I might be able to buy the ebay phone and activate it on the old plan since it is also a 1st gen moto G without switching cards at all.

Red dye?! Yea that sounds like it might be done for...

I forget but does the 1st gen Moto G have a sim card slot? I think you will want to swap the sim card out from the old phone to new phone if you're wanting to keep the old plan. If not you may have to order a new sim card then.

Yes.

while you're at it, check Lyca Mobile.

Buy the 'free SIM' (shipping is like $7) and load $$ onto it. They have an un-advertised PAYG (pay as you go) 'plan', it's something like 5c per minute/txt.

DW and I have been using for years, we spend around $10/mo on 2 lines. Mine is like $2, hers is more, she has more friends :)

No it doesn't have a sim card slot but I assume there is one somewhere it there somehow. I found this thread on RW and it looks like I could just activate a used phone RW Moto G 1st gen on my plan but would need the  MEID (serial number) of the phone.

at least that my take from reading those.

Thanks. But the I already have a RW dedicated phone with no sim card slot,,,so I'd need a new phone too.

Target and Walmart are selling unlocked Motorolas for 39-99$ I believe the G5 or E4 ...

You can use in any of the big 4 carriers or its MVNOs ... I currently am on Sprint because they are offering 5 lines FREE unlimited everything for 1 FULL year... amazing deal

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
