DIY xeriscape questions
« on: August 01, 2014, 01:54:06 PM »
After years of fighting my HOA about grass in the front yard the state of CO looks like it will fix the problem and not allow HOAs to mandate grass being grown.  We irrigate off of city water so I would like to completely tear out my grass and xeriscape the entire front yard.  Should save on time, money, and water waste.  I was just wondering if anyone has any good resources for DIY Xeriscape?
Thanks

I don't know where you live, but look up your local Master Gardeners or Master Naturalist organization.  They can put you in touch with someone who will walk you through it for free.  Maybe give them a bottle of wine...  Down here there are Master Gardeners who teach free classes on xeriscaping your yard or plants that draw birds.

Wow, I knew that Colorado had passed some pretty liberal laws on growing grass, but I didn't know that you were forced to grow it in your front yard!  What if you have to pass urinalysis?

Just kidding.

In addition to your local gardening clubs (with the already-mentioned master gardeners), try your local college's agricultural extension or community garden.

You could also mine the DIY sites, for example:

Another vote for checking with cooperative extension.  I'd start with your local (depending on where you live.)  But if you can't find what you need just go online.  I'm sure, for instance, that Arizona cooperative extension has some good resources on xeriscaping since it's so popular there.
