DIY step for aerobics?
« on: September 13, 2015, 01:04:50 PM »
Hi Mustachians! I used to do step aerobics as a teen and want to get back into it. The problem - trying to acquire a step without paying an arm and a leg. They seem to cost at least $70 new, and I couldn't find anything local on craigslist. Any ideas for alternatives that would suffice? I'm not concerned about being able to adjust the height for now.

The requirements:

1. About 3 inches high, but I'm flexible
2. Stable - won't slip around and can support normal human adult weight
3. Won't damage my carpet

I seem to remember using some sort of upside down wooden crate as a teenager, but have no idea where to find something like that now. My boyfriend suggested a phone book, but it felt too unstable last time I tried.

Ideas?

Do you have any wood working tools?  You could get a couple 2x4's and screw them into a base layer of 2x4's (perpendicular to the top ones).  If the wood is too slippery, you could try wrapping it in that grippy padding stuff that people put under floor rugs.

You could also try asking around at local gyms to see if they have any old equipment and how they get rid of it.

Good luck!

I have a bunch of bio bricks that I use like building blocks when I temporarily need something like steps.  I currently have 6 bags dedicated as stairs up to the washing machine for my toddler to help with laundry...  Maybe go to tractor supply or somewhere that will sell you one bag?  If they don't work out, you can still burn them...
