Cutting Doors Into a Shipping Container
« on: July 25, 2014, 07:23:20 PM »
So here is the deal: I am looking to put some storage units at a rental property I have. Due to zoning/building codes I can't economically build a building, but I can put a shipping container on the lot and use that for whatever I see fit. I want to convert a 40' box into either 4 or 5 storage units with individual access. A company here in town says the will do it for $1200….per door! That seems insane to me. Does anyone know of any resources to help with this project? All I am looking to do is to cut holes and install access doors (either roll up or hinged) in the side of the container.

If you could buy a MILVAN that has come from/to Afghanistan, you could get one already cut for cheap, I'm sure.

You could buy a plasma cutter for less than the price of cutting one door and have a very cool tool to use for other projects when you are done.

Just checked those out. I wish I could find one. They would be perfect.

I'm really looking for a DIY container house webpage or something of the sort.

I was kind of joking... Pakistanis and Afghans have become very proficient at cutting off a wall, taking our stuff out, then welding it back on.

If you google image search "MILVAN" this is the first thing that shows up:

It would be perfect if it was a 40' box.

Have you checked youtube?  I have watched many videos about doing this to a CONEX box but I'm not sure what kind of doors you are looking to install...
