Covered bike rack ideas?
« on: January 28, 2017, 01:35:50 PM »
Hi guys, do you have any suggestions for an outside bike rack for rainy England? Something that is quite simple. We have two bikes. We can attach hooks to the outside brick wall of our house, but not sure how to make a canopy. Or maybe some of you made some free standing racks with cover? Thanks in advance.

Did you see MMM's outdoor hanging bike rack on his latest post?

If the pic link doesn't work, just go to his post at this link and scroll down - http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2017/01/24/diy-studio-building/

Hi, thank you. I did see his bike rack. It looks super cool. I was wondering if others had done anything simpler or any free standing ones.

That's actually a pretty simple design - just replace the fancy-pants rich man's roof with a tarp.

Based on my experience tarping boats, I wouldn't do this. But plywoods sheets can be had for cheap. Replace every 5 years or so.

i was contemplating buying something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Keter-Store-It-Out-Ultra-Storage-Shed-Bin-Bike-Tool-Garden-Storage-Woodland-XL-/181502619201

Ok, the little chain that opens the garbage can lids when the storage box is opened is genius.

How much bike theft is there in your area?  I'd have concerns leaving a bike unattended in a visible place day after day for long periods of time . . . and I'm not in a particularly high crime area.

Maybe put the bike rack in the back of the house? I wouldn't want a bunch of bikes parked out in front of my house either.

String a cable through the bikes and lock it to a gas meter? its no better/worse than a garage door that can be popped in about 15 seconds.

Ours is a combination of a shed roof that attaches to the side of the house (attached at about 5 ft high, slopes to 4 ft something at the front edge) with diagonal bike parking beneath, constructed with a couple of 4x4s along the back and triangles coming out diagonally to hold the back tires in place. It runs the entire inside-the-fence length of the house, and is made from clear ridged roofing panels. In addition to um, "a lot" of bikes under there, it also keeps the garbage and recycling bins covered and in one place.

The working theory is that it should be easier (or at least no harder) to pull out a bike and hop on it then to jump in the car. Seems to be working. (The nice bikes are locked, but merely enough to make it inconvenient to steal them for a joyride -- cutting the cables or 4x4s would be no huge deal.)

Interesting theory.  Are you describing making it easier for the owners to access the bike to decrease car use, or make it easier for theives so they steal the bike and not the car?

I just imagine the second instance would only make sense if thieves are equally likely to target cars or bikes, which im not certain is the case.

If they want a car they're welcome to the unlocked 22-year-old one in the front! They won't make it far, however -- and they need to be able to drive a manual.

Seriously, though, the bikes are behind a gate (so not visible from the street), and they're mostly beaters in a neighborhood where people ride much nicer bikes. The really nice ones are kept inside, and the fairly nice ones are kept locked to the 4X4.

Thus, I meant easier for the residents, by which I mean "for the adult residents", as the kids aren't yet old enough to drive themselves anywhere.  If it's just as fast and easy to go out the back door and grab a bike as it is to head out the front door and hop into a car we're all more likely to ride.

Thank you for explaining.
